Calculate trench excavation, pipe bedding and backfill for a pipe run in one pass.

Formula

Excavation is the full trench prism. Bedding and pipe volumes are deducted to give the backfill. Any material allowance is applied to the imported materials only.

  1. Excavation (m³) = L × W × D
  2. Bedding (m³) = L × W × Bedding thickness × (1 + allowance % ÷ 100)
  3. Pipe (m³) = π × (Outside diameter ÷ 2)² × L
  4. Backfill (m³) = (Excavation − Bedding volume − Pipe) × (1 + allowance % ÷ 100)
  5. Loose spoil (m³) = Excavation × (1 + swell % ÷ 100)
  6. Constraint: Bedding + Pipe outside diameter ≤ Depth

Worked example

A 50 m trench, 600 mm wide and 1.2 m deep, with 150 mm bedding under a 300 mm outside-diameter pipe, 25% swell, no material allowance.

  1. Check the pipe fits: 150 + 300 = 450 mm ≤ 1200 mm ✓
  2. Excavation = 50 × 0.6 × 1.2 = 36.0 m³
  3. Bedding = 50 × 0.6 × 0.15 = 4.5 m³
  4. Pipe = π × 0.15² × 50 = 3.53 m³
  5. Backfill = 36.0 − 4.5 − 3.53 = 27.97 m³
  6. Loose spoil = 36.0 × 1.25 = 45.0 m³
  7. Cover over the pipe = 1200 − 150 − 300 = 750 mm

36 m³ excavated, 4.5 m³ of bedding, about 28 m³ of backfill, with 750 mm of cover over the pipe.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The trench has vertical sides of constant width and depth. Battered, benched or stepped trenches contain more material.
  • The pipe is a plain cylinder at its outside diameter, sitting directly on the bedding. Sockets, bends, fittings and manholes are not included.
  • Bedding is a uniform layer across the full trench width beneath the pipe. Shaped or granular-surround bedding details differ.
  • The material allowance is a delivery uplift on imported material. It is not a geotechnical shrinkage factor and is not applied to the excavation or spoil figures.

What this calculator does not do

  • Does not design trench support, battering or benching — that is a temporary works matter.
  • Does not check the cover over the pipe against any specification or loading requirement.
  • Does not include manholes, chambers, fittings or thrust blocks.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate trench excavation volume?

Multiply trench length by width by depth. For the backfill, deduct the bedding layer and the volume the pipe itself occupies.

What happens if the pipe does not fit in the trench?

The calculator refuses to give you a quantity and tells you why. If bedding plus pipe outside diameter exceeds the trench depth, the pipe would sit above ground level, so any backfill figure would be meaningless.

Should I use pipe outside diameter or nominal size?

Outside diameter. Nominal size usually refers to the bore, and on thick-walled pipes the difference is enough to matter over a long run.

Should I add a material allowance?

That is your call, which is why it defaults to zero. Bedding and backfill are compacted in place, so some uplift on delivered quantity is normal — but the right figure depends on the material and the specified compaction, so the calculator does not assume one.
