Calculate prime coat quantity for a granular base, including sand blinding if it is used.
Formula
Prime volume = Area × Application rate, plus wastage. Sand blinding = Area × blinding rate.
- Area (m²) = L × W
- Prime (L) = Area × Rate (L/m²) × (1 + wastage % ÷ 100)
- Prime mass (kg) = Prime (L) ÷ 1000 × Density (kg/m³)
- Sand (kg) = Area × Sand rate (kg/m²) × (1 + wastage % ÷ 100)
Worked example
A 100 m × 8 m granular base primed at 1.0 L/m², 10% wastage, no sand blinding.
- Area = 100 × 8 = 800 m²
- Net prime = 800 × 1.0 = 800 L
- With 10% wastage = 880 L
- At 1000 kg/m³, that is about 880 kg
Around 880 litres of prime coat, roughly 0.88 tonnes.
Assumptions and limitations
- Application rate is a project value determined by the specification and confirmed by a site trial on the actual base. Base texture, fines content and moisture all change how much the surface absorbs, and published ranges differ by material type — cutbacks are generally applied at higher rates than emulsions. The calculator uses whatever rate you enter.
- Density is used only to convert volume to mass for delivery and payment purposes.
- Sand blinding is optional and is entered as mass per square metre. It is used where the primed surface must be trafficked before the asphalt layer goes down.
- This calculator does not assess curing time or whether the prime is suitable for a given base.

Practical tips
- Prime the base when it is slightly damp, not saturated and not bone dry, unless your specification says otherwise. A properly conditioned base absorbs the prime instead of shedding it.
- Run a trial patch at two or three rates and look at penetration after a few hours. That tells you more than any published table.
- Prime coat rates are several times tack coat rates. If a rate around 0.3 L/m² is being proposed for priming a granular base, someone has confused the two operations.
- Protect the primed surface. Traffic on an uncured prime picks the material straight off the base.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between prime coat and tack coat?
Prime coat penetrates and seals a granular base before the first asphalt layer, and is applied at a relatively high rate. Tack coat is a thin bond layer between two asphalt layers, applied at a much lower rate. They are different materials at different rates for different jobs.
What application rate should I use for prime coat?
It depends on the material and the base. Published guidance reported by FHWA gives roughly 0.9–2.3 L/m² for MC cutbacks and 0.5–1.4 L/m² per 25 mm of depth for emulsions, with other sources suggesting about 0.65–2.0 L/m². A tight fine-graded base takes far less than an open one, so confirm the rate with a site trial and follow your project specification.
How long does prime coat need to cure?
It depends on the material, the rate and the weather. Cutback primes need considerably longer than emulsions. Follow the curing period in your specification and check that the surface is no longer tacky before paving.
When is sand blinding needed?
When the primed surface has to carry construction or public traffic before the asphalt is laid. The sand stops the prime picking up on tyres.
