Convert a paving area and layer thickness into tonnes of asphalt, using a density you control.
Formula
Tonnage = Length × Width × Compacted thickness × Compacted density, plus a wastage allowance.
- Area (m²) = L (m) × W (m)
- Compacted volume (m³) = Area × Thickness (m)
- Net mass (kg) = Volume × Density (kg/m³)
- Total (kg) = Net mass × (1 + wastage % ÷ 100)
- Tonnes = Total kg ÷ 1000
Worked example
A 100 m long, 7 m wide carriageway with a 50 mm compacted wearing course at 2350 kg/m³, allowing 3% wastage.
- Area = 100 × 7 = 700 m²
- Thickness = 50 mm = 0.05 m
- Volume = 700 × 0.05 = 35.0 m³
- Net mass = 35.0 × 2350 = 82,250 kg = 82.25 t
- With 3% wastage = 82.25 × 1.03 = 84.72 t
About 84.7 tonnes, or roughly 121 kg of asphalt per square metre of road.
Assumptions and limitations
- Thickness is the compacted thickness. Loose thickness before rolling is roughly 15–25% greater, and using it would badly overstate the tonnage.
- Density is a user input with no universal correct value. It is the in-place compacted density of your mix — the same quantity measured by core density testing or a nuclear gauge, equal to the bulk specific gravity multiplied by the density of water. It depends on aggregate specific gravity, binder content, grading and compaction, so it must come from your job-mix formula or field results rather than a table.
- The area is treated as a plain rectangle. Tapers, laybys, junctions and irregular widths should be calculated separately and added.
- No allowance is made for the tack coat, which is a separate item.

Practical tips
- The quick field check is kilograms per square metre: thickness in metres × density. At 50 mm and 2350 kg/m³ that is about 118 kg/m². Crews who know this number spot a wrong order immediately.
- Density from the trial section beats any published table. Once you have field cores or nuclear gauge results from the job, use that value.
- Order slightly short on the first day and reconcile against tickets. Surplus hot mix cools and cannot be stored.
- When the specification gives a mass per square metre rather than a thickness, use that directly — it removes the density assumption entirely.

How do I calculate asphalt tonnage?
Multiply area by compacted thickness to get volume in cubic metres, then multiply by the compacted mix density in kg/m³ and divide by 1000 for tonnes. The density must come from your mix design or field results, not from a generic table.
What density should I use for asphalt?
The in-place compacted density of your own mix, from the job-mix formula or from core and nuclear gauge results. Published bulk specific gravities for compacted asphalt span roughly 2.200 to 2.500, so about 2200–2500 kg/m³, but that is a sanity range across all mixes rather than a value you can adopt. Aggregate specific gravity and binder content move it significantly, which is why the calculator makes it editable.
How many tonnes of asphalt per square metre?
Multiply the compacted thickness in metres by the density. At 50 mm and 2350 kg/m³ you get about 118 kg/m², so roughly 8.5 m² per tonne.
Do I use loose or compacted thickness?
Compacted. The specified layer thickness is always the compacted value. Loose mat thickness before rolling is typically 15–25% greater, which is a compaction allowance for the paver operator, not a quantity for ordering.
Does "ton" mean the same thing everywhere?
No, which is why this calculator labels them explicitly. A metric tonne is 1000 kg. A US short ton is 907.18 kg. On a large paving job the difference between the two is substantial.
